The Captain is Dead: Shamelessly Self-Promoting My Promotion for Someone Else's Game

It’s time for me to take a break from shameless self-promotion and interminable navel-gazing about my Kickstarter campaign, and shamelessly promote someone else’s game. AEG picked up the rights to a Kickstarter alumnus called The Captain is Dead, and they’re about to unleash it on a waiting world.

I have not played The Captain is Dead, but it sounds like a clever premise for a cooperative board game: A spaceship is in a state of crisis, almost undone by a series of mishaps capped off by the fact that the Captain is now dead. The players, as individual crew members, have to pull together to save the ship and themselves. This description notwithstanding, the tone is jokey and light, more Galaxy Quest than Alien.

I was one of the writers whom AEG asked to come up with our own narrative of how the ship got to the state in which in which it finds itself at the beginning of the game, including how the Captain got to be dead. Just a little publicity exercise in support of the game. They posted my story today

I had a blast writing it, and I worked in references to as many sci-fi movies/TV series as I could cram int the allotted space. It shouldn’t be hard to name all 5, but a virtual high-five to you if you spot them all. Plus, you get an elaborate, funk-a-licious private handshake if you can guess the inspiration for the Captain. Don’t ket the strawberries fool you it’s not Captain Queeg from The Caine Mutiny. Hint: If you watched a lot of Adult Swim in its early days, you may have seen the show.
